Readers judged two sets of makeovers, each shown under the same before photo: 22 makeovers of a boxy 1980s RV and 24 of a tired camper van. The same result held in both: pale walls, light wood, sage and soft textiles won, and dark builds lost.
Black cabinets, charcoal floors, pipe shelving and blackout overland builds drew the fewest hearts, even though that look is everywhere in van-life photography.
When readers explained a thumbs-down, colour was the first complaint (29%). Makeovers that changed one thing and left the old interior around it scored 30%.
