of dislike reasons were “too cold / stark” versus “looks dated”
Source: Statwren, Why Readers Reject a Room (2026). Share of 6,559 dislike reasons from 2,428 homestratosphere.com readers, Sep 8 to Oct 8, 2026. Selected reasons shown.
When a reader gives a room a thumbs-down, they are asked what does not work for them, from eight fixed answers. “Not my style” leads, as you would expect. Second place is the interesting one: “too cold / stark” is given more often than “looks dated”.
Price is almost never the objection. “Out of my budget” accounts for 1% of dislikes, which suggests readers judge rooms on feel, not cost.
The full report links every reason to the features of the room it was given for: bouclé sofas draw “too cold” 42% of the time, and green cabinets draw colour complaints 52% of the time.
